The Ocean Road Home
It finally happened - the day I had been waiting for the last four months. The day of the road trip, the big exciting one - the one that heralds the beginning of my summer adventure.
Since I've come to Uni, Dadda and I have made a tradition that when he comes to pick me up to bring me home for summer, we have a proper road trip and instead of taking the M5 which is by far the quickest route between Bath - Cornwall, we follow the Ocean Road all the way home stopping in the quaint, market and fishing villages on the way down to experience the variety that the coast road has to offer. Sometimes we go the Exmoor way, last year visiting Tar steps which were beautiful. This year, we followed the coast completely making stops/at
Dunster medieval village/castle
Minehead for an ice cream sundae
Selworthy thatched village & green
Lynmouth Funicular
and
Ilfracoombe harbour
It was all mizzle in Bath as I shut the front door and waved goodbye to the four floor maisonette we had been living in all year but as we approached Minehead, the sun finally began to shine and it felt like summer.
I love long trips flying over the roads with my dad - it's a pastime we've always treasured together, Especially when it's through windy country roads on his motorcycle. When I was a small kid, we'd often take evening drives and have an impromptu car picnic on the beachfront or Gwithian cliffs and watch the stars come out. We'd let our dog out because he'd be slobbering all over our heads with excitement and then he'd chase the car along side running about the dunes like a mad thing, high on rabbit smells.
I was so excited to see the Lynmouth Funicular! Unfortunately we didn't have time to make the journey that day so instead I watched it longingly to-ing and fro-ing up and down the cliff wondering what the view must have been like from the top.
These Seagulls weren't as menacing as the Bath gulls. The other day I had my sandwich stolen when I was on my way to work so I'm not sure if I've forgiven these guys quite yet...
We didn't really use the Satnav as it's pretty easy to follow the coastline all the way down South :) But sometimes it's fun to watch the little map moving about ^.^
Dad and I looking for a nice basket. I want something to keep my veggies in when I move into my new flat! Plus something romantic and lovely to go picnicking with so I can live the life of somebody from an old story.
This is my Dadda. He raised me, a single parent which is a pretty cool achievement. He's also one of my best friends. He's travelled all over the world on ships and been to strange places like Fiji, used to perform in Gymkhana events with his horses and once had a pet goat that lived in the house with him. When I was four, he made me a little mermaid themed birthday cake by hand, drawing the characters on top, and threw me a birthday party every year on the beach. Dad loves Disney and we've travelled to Florida three times together and California and he has a collection of Mickey Mouses. He's always supported (and encouraged) my obsession with mermaids and fairies and most importantly, supported my random life decisions and constant changing mind. He's quirky, and sometimes shy but he's my favourite and will always be my mad old Sea King.
The road went on forever and it was magical, winding around and dipping into little valleys and seaside villages - all the way, following the ocean
I made a little video of our journey home, a small narrative about finding my way back to the Sea. I wanted to upload it in this post but the internet connection back here at home just can't handle the uploading so that will have to wait for another day. It's been by first week back in Cornwall now, and the weather's been all over the place. On Tuesday, I'm off to the Scillies for an early birthday treat with Dad although the weather is forecast to be terrible. I can't let things like this matter - there is no such thing as bad weather, just different types of good weather. Right? Right?? I do love thunderstorms after all, and sea mist is one of my favourite types of weather.
This is such a beautiful post - especially love the bit about your Dad! And the hand lettering - how do you do that!?! Do you use a graphics tablet? This may be another thing you're going to have to teach me this summer! ;D xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Alex! :D My Dad is pretty dang special, I felt he deserved a place in this space! ^_^
DeleteI'll show you what I did on Friday, although it's really nothing special :P promise!

Thank you Carly! :D That sea gull was a real poser :P Lynmouth is such a special place! That Funicular made me almost want to stay forever :P xxx
DeleteYour dad deserves best dad award!! I'd love to go on a road trip with mine someday!
ReplyDeleteOmg, i really am terrified of going near sea gulls. The bath gulls seem scary, especially since they are so unafraid of humans!
Lovely photos as always sarah! :) I LOVE your scenery pictures!

Thankyou Carina!
DeleteSea gulls are quite frankly, awful, terrifying and ruthless. They are fearless - although the other day I saw one dive bomb a couple sat outside the Boston tea party in Bath and the guy swung an umbrella through the air and deflected it's attack! I think Seagull shields will become a thing soon :P

What an amazing tradition, reading all about it made me smile - what a lovely Dad you have! x
ReplyDeleteThankyou Chloe! :D I am rather fond of him :P
DeleteI'm super glad it made you smile ^_^ Yay! :D <3
Oh Sarah, the love you express for your Dadda (I like it!) is heartwarming. What a beautiful idea to take the scenic route to home. I loved Minehead and Dunster when we stayed there (and we were in Exmoor a few weeks ago!) . I hope you have a magical time in the Scillies. I will be visiting them next summer on a cruise around islands of the UK and I can't wait!!!x
ReplyDeleteHa,you're not the only blogger whose been robbed by a seagull, I will never forget this post: http://rubyslipperjourneys.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/the-birds.html in which Emily had her cornish pasty stolen by a seagull in St Ives!!!!x
Wow! A cruise around the UK islands?! That sounds incredible! Does that include the Shetland isles? and Isles of Man? That honestly sounds like the most amazing cruise! I hope you have the loveliest time :)
DeleteOooh thanks for the link! I'll go and read up on Emily's story ^_^ I'm sure it will be an amusing read! Us Seagull victims must all sympathise with each other v.v xxx
Absolutely stunning photos! This post makes me want to go visit the south of England right this minute. Looks like you and your dad had a really lovely road trip :) Your dad seems like a brilliant man.

ReplyDeleteI lived in Bristol for 2 years and made many-a journey home to Cornwall but never thought to make an actual road trip of it along the coastline! This is genius, and definitely something I'll be doing next time I'm on my way back from visiting family up there. Love this! x

DeleteRoad trips are the best! Sometimes it's great to just take a day out to wind around lots of little places you'd normally overlook and spontaneously stop, jump out and explore! :D
I hope you have many a wonderful road trip Rachel! :D <3

I absolutely adore this post! I would love to do a road trip one day but I have literally zero people who could come with me. I love the lettering in the first picture also did you do that yourself? It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeletehellomissjordan.com xx
Thankyou Jordan ^_^
DeleteA solo road trip could be just as fun! Then you don't have to argue with anyone about the playlist for the road :p
The type in the first picture is a mixture of different typefaces I have in my collection, I edited the picture and layered them on top and arranged them with the symbols ^_^ Not quite as cool as doing it myself by hand. My scanner is back in Bath otherwise I might have given it a try! A few of my typographies on this blog I've done by hand with a paintbrush and scanned in :)

Aw, this is absolutely lovely - we used to holiday in Woolacombe and Croyde every year, travelling down along that way, stopping at all these places and more and it's so lovely to see these beautiful photographs! They remind me of sweet holidays when you're content with nothing but playing in the sand, even if it's grey and miserable, because you're at the beach!
ReplyDeleteYour papa sounds like a lovely guy - enjoy your time at home!
Uncia and Tigris
That road trip is such a sweet idea! And your photos are stunning. I especially love the ones of the ocean :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely relaxing post to read ... I love the relationship you have with your dad, that's special! Now I want to go the beach and I shall on Monday! I'm coming to Cornwall in a few weeks to camp and surf, I'm so excited. Xxx
ReplyDeleteA beautiful journey. Your father sounds like an absolutely fantastic parent!
